🎯 Advertising language: the text and the outside world are connected / The meaning is not a semiotic process

💬 video shows a woman at her breakfast table calmly sipping her tea and browsing the newspaper. She keeps getting hiccups right through this process. And then she glances at the Volkswagen Polo ad with the surprisingly low price in the newspaper. She then continues to read the paper and sip her tea, only with the hiccups having disappeared.

 💬 The proposition that the car is surprisingly inexpensive is embedded in the text since the word only in ‘POLO L, only £7,990’ implies that the price is low.

💬 The meaning is not a semiotic process, but crucially one relying heavily on context and the self-generated inferences constructed by the audience.

💬: Volkswagen’s cars are surprisingly inexpensive; so much so, in fact, that shock caused to potential consumers by revealing these low prices may even stop hiccups.

💥 The theory suggests that the jolt of adrenaline triggered by shock or surprise can indeed interrupt the normal signals of the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm.

A linguagem publicitária: o texto e o mundo estão conectados / O significado não é um processo semiótico.

A propaganda mostra uma mulher à mesa do café da manhã, tomando seu chá calmamente e folheando o jornal. Ela começava a ter soluços durante todo o processo. Então, ela olhava para o anúncio do Volkswagen Polo com o preço surpreendentemente baixo no jornal. Ela continuava a ler o jornal e a tomar seu chá, só que agora os soluços haviam desaparecido.

A proposição de que o carro é surpreendentemente barato está implícita no texto, visto que a palavra "apenas- only" em "POLO L, apenas £7,990 Libras" implica que o preço está baixo.

O significado não é um processo semiótico, mas, crucialmente, depende fortemente do contexto e das inferências autogeradas construídas pelo público.

: Os carros da Volkswagen são surpreendentemente baratos; tão baratos, aliás, que o choque causado aos potenciais consumidores pela revelação desse preço pode até parar soluços.

Um susto (choque de susto) pode parar o soluço porque libera adrenalina, que interfere no nervo frênico (responsável pelo diafragma) e interrompe o espasmo, restabelecendo o funcionamento normal.
